Family Travel: Packing List and Tips for Traveling 1 Month with a Carry-on Only

Article updated: April 5, 2026

We did it! After more than 100 flights with kids, we’ve officially banned checked bags—unless we’re absolutely forced to. No more endless waiting at the luggage carousel, no more stress over lost bags, and most importantly: hello freedom of movement with one carry-on per person!

If you’re wondering how to pack light for a family flight without sacrificing your comfort (or the kids’), you’ve come to the right place.

THE “FAIL” ANECDOTE THAT TAUGHT ME EVERYTHING: MY MONTH IN ITALY (OR THE DIAPER TRAUMA)

During my first family backpacking trip, I only had one child. Yet, I brought the equivalent of an entire diaper bag filled just with toys… not to mention the actual diapers! I had so many that I went through half of my month-long trip in Italy without buying a single one. Imagine the useless weight I was lugging on my back for nothing. #MomAdvice: Don’t do this. You can find diapers everywhere on the planet!

Quick Mom Tip: Before you even start packing, make sure you find the best price for your flight AND buy your ticket. Personally, it’s always my first official move, and I often use flight comparison tools like Skyscanner to dig up the cheapest deals. Once you’re there, if you want true freedom, renting a car is often the key to getting off the beaten path!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR LUGGAGE LIGHTER?

Traveling minimalist isn’t about deprivation; it’s about making smart choices.

  • The 1-Week Rule: No matter if you’re leaving for 3 weeks or a month, only bring clothes for a MAXIMUM of 7 days—I’d even say 5 days is my sweet spot (but do bring 7-8 days’ worth of underwear). Plan to do a quick load of laundry once a week, which means you might wear your daytime clothes for a couple of days in a row.

  • Choose the Right Fabrics: Focus on lightweight travel clothes that dry quickly.

  • [Click here for my best tip—a compression bag]: This is my secret weapon. It truly compresses your clothes to save space in your bag and helps keep everything organized.

MY UNPOPULAR OPINION: BAN THE PAJAMAS! ❌

I’m standing my ground on this one: you really don’t need pajamas. For the kids, tomorrow’s clean, stretchy clothes will do the trick. For parents, it’s the same deal—a clean t-shirt works as pajamas at night and as your outfit the next day.

MY ULTIMATE CARRY-ON PACKING LIST

In your personal item or small backpack (This is the best travel backpack—I used it for my entire world tour!):

  • The Lifesaver: Disposable wet wipes. Essential for messes or cleaning dirty hands, whether you have a baby in diapers or NOT.

  • Essentials: PASSPORT!!, travel documents, insurance papers (if you’re looking for travel insurance, check this out), and empty water bottles (this is my favorite water bottle of all time).

  • Entertainment: iPad, laptop, charging cables, airplane headphones, notebook and pens, books or an e-reader (I personally use this one and love it).

In your compression bag (here is the compression bag I swear by):

  • CLOTHING: Swimsuits, beach cover-up, sandals, walking shoes (wear these on the plane to save space), rain jacket, hat, sunglasses, 4 to 7 daytime outfits (adjust between long and short sleeves depending on the weather), and underwear.

Easily accessible in your carry-on:

  • TOYS/GAMES: The “adult hand” rule. The toys your kids want to bring shouldn’t be bigger than that! A few cars, stickers, and a deck of cards for you and the kids will be more than enough to pass the time on the plane and during the trip.

In your toiletry bag (this is the model I’ve used for years):

  • HYGIENE & HEALTH: Menstrual cup 🩸 (a must-have for traveling light), toothbrush, toothpaste, bar soap, shampoo, deodorant, travel hairbrush, and a razor.

  • FIRST AID KIT: Allergy medication, Tylenol/Advil, anti-nausea meds, anti-diarrheal, activated charcoal (a must-have for food poisoning in my opinion!), stomach relief (like Gaviscon), and bandages.

  • Beach Gear: Travel beach towel, snorkel mask, and swim floaties for young children.

  • Practical Extras: Plastic bags (for dirty laundry), Ziploc bags (to organize everything AND store half-eaten snacks).

You can find many of my travel essentials to help you pack like a minimalist right here.

And most importantly: notice I didn’t mention bringing sunscreen or mosquito repellent. Even though these are family essentials, you can find them at a low price locally. You don’t need to bring EVERYTHING—just the necessities. Once you arrive, you can buy what’s missing AS NEEDED. 🙂

How to book your flights and accommodations at the best price?

To find the best price—or at least the cheapest option possible—I suggest doing your own research to compare rates. On my end, I always test different possibilities.

This means I look for the best accommodation prices across various platforms such as:

And of course, there is always the option of swapping your home with someone else’s. Your nights will then cost you $0.

In short, I look for the cheapest possible accommodation that still meets my needs! This approach is a guaranteed way to save money.

Once I have spotted my hotel or lodging, I perform the same exercise for plane tickets. I search for the best prices for my flight using a comparison platform like Skyscanner to find the lowest fare.

CHEAP ACCOMMODATIONS & BUDGET-FRIENDLY GETAWAYS

Once your tickets are booked on Skyscanner, the next step is finding a place to sleep. To find family gems that can accommodate tribes of 5 or more without breaking the bank, I often find at a low price on Booking.com here.

And what about your outings? Don’t waste your time standing in line with impatient kids. To save time, I always book our must-see activities via GetYourGuide right here.

If you want to explore with total freedom (and avoid paying for taxis multiple times a day!), I suggest renting a car through DiscoverCars here to help you save money on your local transport!
