My tiny smart home – Google Home Mini review

You might have seen that Léa and I recently received a Google Home Mini. I have been looking at buying one for several months now, the temptation was hard every time I would be walking by this item at the Best Buy store. As we only received one Google Home and that we’re are 2 sisters with different homes, we had to play a game of “rock, paper, scissors” to determine which one of us would be bringing this baby home.

I’ll let you guess who won! 😉

I have been testing my Google Home Mini for a few weeks now and thought I would share with you what I really thought of it. To do so, I will list out the pros and cons of this powerful assistant speaker.

PROS

She’s bilingual

You see, in my home as we speak both French and English, this feature was a big plus for us. We can talk to her in both languages and she answers us every time. Another feature that I like is that we get to ask her to translate words from French to English or vice-versa. I would say this somewhat helped the hubby to learn a few more French words.

I get to boss her around

You know how much I like to boss people around, well my Google Home definitely fills up that void when I work from home. Plus, she listens to me like no other! Hahah! I also find the voice command very useful when I am cooking and that I cannot use my hand or to ask her questions about cooking methods, or even to set a timer. I also like it when I walk in the door and ask her to play my favorite playlist or when I am being super lazy on the couch and I am wondering what the weather is.

The speaker

I personally find it’s the perfect speaker for someone living in a small home like mind of 1000 square feet. When I turn on the music the volume is adequate for my space and if I feel like having a little party, it can actually get quite loud in here! 😉 It’s the perfect speaker for my everyday need!

Hello Sacha

I like to wake up in the morning and to tell her “Hey Google, hello!” Immediately, I get a complete rundown of the news and of the current weather. I get to hear the latest news while reading my emails, having breakfast, a way to begin my day properly.

Many other features

Google Home has many other features. It can control your TV, read your agenda, create a shopping/ grocery list for you, and so much more. It’s like my personal mini secretary.

CONS

She doesn’t always understand French

Let’s say that her and I had a few ups and downs. It mostly happened when I was asking her things in French. I could ask her, over and over again and she would never understand what I was asking for. That especially occurs when I ask her; “Hey Google, play the Spotify playlist called 90’s smash hits”. Dear god, I think I listened to all the songs with “90’s” in it, but never to the actual playlist. Haha!

No touch control

I find it very difficult not to have a touch screen option or a way of controlling her with buttons. I wish I could change songs by using the app on my phone, just like I would do with a Bluetooth speaker.

My Google Home Mini and I certainly had to learn to love on each other. In the beginning, I found it really hard not being able to push a button, mostly when she wouldn’t understand French properly. Let’s say that now that she’s bilingual things are running smoothly.

The Google Home Mini retails for $79, but it often goes on sale at Best buy for as low as $49. At this price, I find it makes for a great purchase to turn your home into a smart home.

** The Google Home Mini was gifted to us by Google. However, all opinions are ours and are 100% authentic as a way to inspire each and every one in our day-to-day lives. The Sparks and Bloom sisters swear by this!
